Hand-carved Agra soapstone tealight holder, pierced with bands of carved petals. Carved from a single piece of soapstone in Agra — the city of the Taj Mahal — by a family of artisans working in the Mughal stone-carving tradition. The openwork is jali lattice, cut by hammer and chisel: dozens of openings in a single stone, each one made individually. Set a tealight inside and the petals catch the flame, scattering warm light in every direction. Approx. 7 cm high × 6 cm wide; fits a standard tealight candle.
